Silk thread wrapping is a common and typical form in Alice Anderson's work. As a child, Anderson invented rituals for herself in order to relieve the anxiety of being home alone: wrapping her body in silk thread or other objects. Initially using thread, she later began to use dolls' hair, which symbolizes the connection between mother and child.
In an increasingly digitalized society, Anderson preserves historical objects as if they were fossilized through the ritualized process of wrapping fading objects. The copper wire that makes the computer world what it is by transmitting energy and information symbolizes the powerful nervous system that transmits information from one organism to the next. Anderson refers to these figurines or "totems" as "mental machines".
