Artists Andy Warhol
Year of Creation 丨1986
Material丨Screen Printing
Size丨122 x 122 cm
This work is from Andy Warhol's Cowboys and Indians collection, published in 1986, a series of 10 prints depicting the artist's fantasies of the American West, mixed with historical figures and popular media interpretations of the past. Portraits in the series include actor John Wayne, sharpshooter Annie Oakley, President Teddy Roosevelt, Apache leader Geronimo, and military general George Custer.
To create his Native American-related prints, Andy Warhol traveled to the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City to photograph Prairie Indian shields, Northwest Coast masks, and kachina dolls, which he later transformed into his signature color screen prints. Published in 1986, the series was one of the last major series of works completed by the artist before his death in 1987.
