Wrapping the Roman Wall

Christo & Jeanne-Claude

The nearly 2,000-year-old Roman Wall, built by the Roman Emperors Aurelian and Probus, encircles the city of Rome, Italy. For 40 days between February and March 1974, an 820-foot-long section of the wall was wrapped in polypropylene and rope to cover the sides, top, and arches of the Roman Wall. Christo & Jeanne-Claude chose to create their temporary work of art at the end of Via Veneto, one of Rome's busiest thoroughfares, at the edge of the Villa Borghese gardens. By wrapping this form, the artists have given the Roman wall a new image and prompted people to look at the world around them in a different light by changing their relationship with the surrounding landscape.
